On behalf of the School Governing Body and all staff members we wish to thank you for your continued support during this term. We have had a successful 1st Term with the majority of learners focused on learning and doing their absolute best every day. However, there have been a few learners who displayed behavioural challenges. We ask that parents assist the school in our attempt to improve learner behaviour and cultivate respect for others.
Much has been written in the media about the poor state of reading in our schools. This is not a new topic but one that always deserves our attention. Learning to read is a gift that each and every child deserves to receive.
It never ceases to amaze me how people unrelated to education seem to think that teaching someone to read should be an easy task and they cannot understand why so many of our learners still can’t read with understanding, experienced Foundation Phase teachers know that there are numerous factors influencing the skill to read.
Every child should learn to read, so that they can read to learn.
We can start creating a love for reading and books in our own home. Children learn by watching and copying the adults around them. We can influence their thinking and attitude towards reading by the way we personally interact with books. Even if children can’t read they love listening to a story.
We need to show the children that reading can be fun.
You as a parent can read books to the children that they might not be able to read to themselves and this will slowly but surely catch their interest. I am suggesting that we take a few minutes each day to read to the children from a different book, reading for the pure pleasure and enjoyment it brings. Reading will become something to strive for instead of a thing of shame that he/she can’t master.
Through you, your children will see the joy reading can bring.
There have been so many amazing events that have taken place this term as a result of the hard work and dedication of our staff and learners. Some highlights include:
- The Two Oceans Aquarium visited the school and the Grade 5 learners interacted with “Mr. T” a conservationist from the aquarium.
- Our Grade 4 learners enjoyed every moment of their visit to the Education Museum where they learnt about what school was like for their grandparents.
- The Grade 5’s attended a programme at the Save Our Seas Foundation. They were excited to touch the sea creatures in the rock pools on the beach.
- The Science Club members were introduced to Coding. This will be followed by an introduction to Robotics next term.
- The Mediators successfully completed their Conflict Resolution training and received their Badges in an assembly where they shared what they learnt. They reminded the learners that they are only “One Call Away”.
- The Soccer and Netball extra-mural have completed their selection process and are eager to start playing matches in the 2nd

To the staff of York Road Primary School, I would like to say THANK YOU for everything you do on a daily basis to enrich the lives of those entrusted in your care. The difference you make in the lives of our children and indeed the future cannot be quantified.
We wish our Muslim families well during RAMADAAN.
To all our Christian families have a blessed EASTER as you remember the death and resurrection of Christ.
Please take care and let the learners have a restful break. Learners who have not been academically successful need to utilize their holidays for revision.
